The spine for this interesting and colourful binding, by Susan Durrant, has been covered in blue and the boards in a canvas-like red bookcloth, into which several openings have been cut for the shells and a metal ship’s wheel. A gull has been painted directly onto the cover and the painted compass on the back board is tilted to two points east.
John Walters has made a beautiful binding in vellum.
The decoration on the front board is a collage of coloured leather depicting marine life and the three dimensional effect gives the feeling that one is peering into a rockpool. A lovely ink drawing of a lobster appears on the back board, and the book is protected by a slipcase covered with the endpapers taken from the original book.
