The Birdflight series of artist’s books is my own development of the flag book and combines my love drawing with a life-long interest in the natural world.
In my former life as a veterinary surgeon, I often had to handle birds and was always moved by the lightness of their being.
A bird’s bones are hollow, their feathers are hollow, and they have air sacs beneath the skin as an extension of their lungs. They seem to weigh nothing in relation to their size.
It is as though a bird has barely materialised and is only partly of this world.
Unfastening a Japanese bone clasp, releases the painted paper birds which seem to fly across the sea or over rooftops.
The Birdflight series of books can each be made to commission but as they are all individually hand painted, no two are ever going to quite the same.
